Retrieval of NO2 for scenes including realistic clouds

Test case

  • Subdomain of ICON, approx. 350x350km²
  • Resolution of cloud data approx. 1.2×1.2km², 296x276x110 grid boxes
  • Simulations performed for pixel size of 7x7km² (50×48 pixels)

Reflectance and box-AMF simulation

  • wavelength: 550nm
  • US standard atmosphere
  • SZA: 30°, SAA: 25°
  • Viewing direction: nadir
  • surface albedo: 0.05
  • clouds from ICON simulation
Simulated reflectance. The left side is simulated on the same horizontal resolution as the cloud data (approx. 1.2×1.2km²), the middle is for a pixel size of approx. 7×7 m². The right panel shows the standard deviation of the reflectance for 10^5 photons per pixel.

Reflectance spectra for pixels indicated in figure above. The shaded areas show the standard deviation of the Monte Carlo results.
Layer-AMfs for pixels indicated in figure above. The shaded areas show the standard deviation of the Monte Carlo results.

Layer-AMFs for horizontal cross sections at various altitudes.

Standard deviation of layer-AMFs for horizontal cross sections at various altitudes. There are larger values of several per cent. Those occur randomly. The mean standard deviation of all boxes is 1.9%.

Layer-AMFs for vertical cross sections at various y-positions.
