PhD position on "Representing model error and observation error uncertainty for data assimilation of polarimetric radar measurements"

27.09.2019

A fully funded PhD position (75% E13 TVL) is available at the Institute of Meteorology, at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. The successful PhD candidate will be supervised jointly by Priv.-Doz. Tijana Janjic Pfander and Dr. Axel Seifert (DWD) and will work on "Representing model error and observation error uncertainty for data assimilation of polarimetric radar measurements". The goal of this project is to find an optimal approach for assimilating polarimetric radar measurements with an ensemble Kalman filter. In particular, the representation error part of the observation error will be parameterized using high-resolution simulations and included in data assimilation algorithm.

Applications should be submitted before October 15th to tijana.pfander@lmu.de, and should include: CV, master and bachelor certificates including a transcript of records and contact information of two referees for letters of recommendation. Requirements for the position include programming skills, some knowledge of numerical discretization/minimization algorithms or data assimilation methodology, and the willingness to work and code with numerical weather prediction models. Funding is available for 3 years with a possibility of extension.

This PhD project is embedded in the Priority Programme 2115 „Fusion of Radar Polarimetry and Numerical Atmospheric Modelling Towards an Improved Understanding of Cloud and Precipitation Processes“ (PROM) funded by German Science Foundation (DFG).
